The following job descriptions illustrate four of the primary areas that the Railroad will accepts applications, and resumes for.  If the Railroad has a need for one of the following positions, and the Railroad thinks that your application and resume demonstrates that you may be qualified, then, the Railroad, as a next step, will make contact with you and conduct a phone interview.  If the Railroad does not have an opening, but thinks based on your application and or resume that you may be qualified for the position that you are applying for, then the Railroad will keep you application and resume “on file” for consideration if a position opens.

Diesel Locomotive Electrician

Job Summary

Locomotive Electricians play an important part in keeping our diesel/electric locomotive fleet running in a safe, efficient and dependable manner . Almost every system on a locomotive is or is directly connected to a complex electrical system.

Primary Activities and Responsibilities

  • As a Diesel Electrician, you will be working on our fleet of EMD and GE diesel/electric locomotives both in the field and at the Railroad’s locomotive repair shop facility.
  • You will inspect, troubleshoot, repair, maintain and upgrade all of the low and high voltage electrical components that are used on a diesel/electric locomotive.
  • You will use blueprints, schematics and location circuit plans.

Training

Training will be required commensurate with a new hires experience and prior training, but may include on the job, and or classroom training.

Minimum Qualifications

  • You must be at least 18 years old.
  • High School diploma/GED
  • You must speak and read English because you’ll be asked to follow posted bulletins, regulations, rule books, timetables, switch lists, etc.
  • You must provide verifiable work or education experience in electronics, control systems, AC/DC motors or a current journeyman’s electrical card.
  • You must be able to read electrical schematics and prints.
  • Experience troubleshooting electronic control systems is required, and experience working with large motor generators and high-voltage circuitry is preferred.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Locomotive electrical repair and maintenance.
  • Outside work experience, examples may include (low or high voltage industrial, electronics repair, commercial electrician)

Physical Requirements

  • Medium to heavy work, lifting up to 50 pounds occasionally and up to 83 pounds on a rare basis
  • Stoop/bend/kneel/crouch/crawl/balance/climb
  • Work in cramped, confined, enclosed, or awkward places
  • Walk over uneven terrain
  • Demonstrate auditory and visual acuity

Basic Competencies

  • Verbal comprehension (Understand oral and written communications–both general and technical)
  • Communication skills (provide clear instructions/directions)
  • Reasoning skills (problem solving and troubleshooting skills)

  • Must pass all required assessments
  • Must pass a background screening

Diesel Locomotive Mechanic

Job Summary

Inspect, troubleshoot, service, repair, maintain, and upgrade diesel/electric locomotives.

Primary Activities and Responsibilities

  • Ensure compliance with all railroad rules and regulations for safety, operations and the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA)
  • Inspect, maintain, troubleshoot and repair malfunctions in diesel engines, air brake equipment, running gear or locomotive components
  • Rivet, bolt, glue, braze or weld to fabricate, modify or design replacement parts for equipment
  • Fabricate, cut, shape, and perform finish operations using various types of materials
  • Perform periodic service on locomotives

Training

Training will be required commensurate with a new hires experience and prior training, but may include on the job, and or classroom training. 

Minimum Qualifications

  • High School diploma/GED
  • 18 years of age or older
  • Valid Driver’s License
  • One year mechanical experience

Preferred Qualifications

  • Two years diesel mechanic experience
  • Completion of a mechanical vocational or trade school program
  • One years experience reading and interpreting technical drawings and or schematics.

Basic Competencies

  • Verbal comprehension (Understand oral and written communications–both general and technical)
  • Communication skills (provide clear instructions/directions)
  • Reasoning skills (problem solving and troubleshooting skills)
  • Mechanical aptitude

Physical Requirements

  • Heavy work, lifting up to 70 pounds occasionally and up to 100 pounds on a rare basis
  • Stoop/bend/kneel/crouch/balance/climb on an occasional basis
  • Exposure to equipment that intensifies the heat factor on an occasional basis

Employment Conditions

  • Work safely to prevent on the job accidents and injuries
  • Wear protective equipment such as hearing protection, hard hats, safety-toe boots, or safety glasses
  • Complete annual training and pass safety rules examination
  • May require random testing for drugs and/or alcohol

  • Occasionally work outside, in all weather conditions, in confined spaces, and at elevated heights.

Freight Conductor Trainee

Job Summary

  • Supervise train crews on a freight train and coordinate switching operations. 
  • Place rail cars to facilitate loading and unloading and the makeup and breakdown of trains in a rail yard, industrial plant, or similar location.

Primary Activities and Responsibilities

  • Ensure compliance with all train orders, signals, and railroad rules and regulations for safety, operations, and the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA)
  • Review instructions from dispatchers and yardmasters, and discuss with locomotive engineer and train crew
  • Inspect all equipment on cars prior to departures
  • Receive and transmit information by radio and telephone
  • Read and understand bulletins, work orders, and switch lists
  • Assist and instruct train crews to couple and uncouple cars, operate switches, and make minor repairs to railcars, including replacing heavy couplings or air brake hoses
  • Work with customers to ensure accurate movement and placement of cars
  • Maintain awareness of surrounding area and suspicious activity to ensure rail safety
  • Comprehend color and/or hand signals and systems
  • Quickly and repeatedly make precise adjustments in moving the controls of a machine or vehicle to exact positions

Training

Training will be required commensurate with a new hires experience and prior training, but may include on the job, and or classroom training.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High School diploma/GED
  • 18 years of age or older
  • Valid Driver’s License
  • 2 years verifiable work experience and/or college

Preferred Qualifications

  • Outside work experience
  • Experience operating heavy equipment

Physical Requirements

  • Medium to heavy work, lifting up to 50 pounds occasionally and up to 83 pounds on a rare basis
  • Stoop/bend/kneel/crouch/crawl/balance/climb
  • Work in cramped, confined, enclosed, or awkward places
  • Ride on the outside of rail equipment
  • Walk over uneven terrain
  • Demonstrate auditory and visual acuity/tracking/inspection
  • Must meet color vision requirements as described in the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) Regulations

  • Strict disciplinary policy regarding inability to report to work within proper time frame.

Track Worker

Job Summary

Work as a member of a crew to install new railroad track, maintain existing track and right-of-way.

Primary Activities and Responsibilities

  • Ensure compliance with all railroad rules and regulations for safety, operations and the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA)
  • Participate in group discussions including unit meetings, job briefings, safety meetings or process reviews
  • Remove and replace track and track components (e.g. ties, rails, bars, etc.)
  • Replace or repair track switches with specific components
  • Slide and align tie plates
  • Drill holes through rails for insertion of bolts and tighten or loosen bolts at joints that hold ends or rails together
  • Correct deviations in track surface, alignment and gauge
  • Cut rails to specific lengths
  • Receive instructions, requests, orders, and information from posted bulletins, memorandums, rules and regulation manuals
  • Adjust, lift and roll rails
  • Sort track material for loading and unloading
  • Install and repair street and railroad crossings
  • Cut brush and vegetation from the right-of-way
  • Spray switches, angle bars and joints with oil for lubrication

Promotional/Advancement Opportunities

Qualified Track Workers may be considered for advancement or promotion to other positions if needed by the Railroad. Examples of possible positions of advancement include, but are not limited to: Machine Operator, Welder, Foreman and Track Inspector.

Training

  • 18 years of age or older
  • Valid Driver’s License

Preferred Qualifications

  • Outside work experience (e.g. construction, heavy equipment operation, farming, landscaping)
  • Welding experience
  • Commercial Driver’s License (CDL)

Physical Requirements

  • Employees must be able to meet and comply with the track tools/machinery manufacturer’s weight limitation safety rating and recommendations for any equipment associated with performing their duties, including the 300 lb. safety rating for ladders (both portable and affixed) and fall arrest equipment
  • Heavy work, lifting up to 60 pounds occasionally and up to 85 pounds on a rare basis
  • Stoop/bend/kneel/crouch/balance/climb on an occasional basis
  • Exposure to equipment that intensifies the heat factor on an occasional basis
  • Demonstrate auditory and visual acuity/tracking/inspection

Basic Competencies
